Stone Paper: Stone paper production

Stone paper andprofessional cosmetics, made in Germany.

Carthage GmbH is a German manufacturer working across two industries: mineral stone paper for print and industrial packaging, and professional cosmetics for permanent makeup. Both divisions develop and produce in Germany, and the group runs its own PMU academy in Berlin.

One group · two divisions

Carthage works at two ends of the same idea: that a finished product is only as good as the material decisions behind it.

One division mills limestone into a tree free paper used for notebooks, bags and industrial packaging. The other develops pigments, cartridge needles and care products for permanent makeup professionals, manufactured in Germany to ISO and GMP certified standards.

Alongside the two product divisions, Carthage runs a permanent makeup academy in Berlin, where artists train on the same pigments and cartridges the company ships to studios. Product development and education sit in the same building, so what is learned in a course feeds back into what gets made.

Carthage Stone Paper

From quarry to finished sheet.

Stone paper replaces wood pulp with mineral powder. The process uses no water, no bleach and no optical brighteners.

The full process
  1. Working limestone quarry face
    01

    Limestone

High purity calcium carbonate from certified European quarries. Only CaCO₃ of 98% or above enters the line.

  2. Micronized calcium carbonate powder
    02

    Micronization

Crushed and milled to a 1 to 3 micron powder. Uniform particle size decides smoothness and printability.

  3. Food grade HDPE binder pellets
    03

    Compounding

Blended with 18 to 20% food grade HDPE as a binder. No bleaches, acids, solvents or optical brighteners.

  4. Extrusion machinery on a polymer processing line
    04

    Extrusion

Melted and extruded under thermal control into a continuous film, without water consumption.

  5. Sheet running through calender rollers on a production line
    05

    Calendering

Heated rolls set the final thickness, density and surface finish for industrial printing.

  6. Finished Carthage stone paper notebooks
    06

    Finished goods

Slit, sheeted and tested for whiteness, basis weight, tensile strength and water resistance.

Water resistance is a property, not a coating.

Because the sheet is mineral and polymer rather than cellulose, it does not absorb water or tear when wet.

Cosmetics & PMU

Precision, in the hand.

The Carthage cosmetics range is developed around what professional artists actually feel during a session: how a cartridge sits, how a pigment behaves, how skin recovers afterwards.

01

Pigments

Professional PMU pigments developed for controlled application and consistent results across a session.

02

Cartridge needles

Precision cartridges built around stability and grip, including the V6 Pink silicone cartridge.

03

Application

Products tested in real studio conditions, where control and comfort decide the result.

Shared principles

Different products. The same discipline.

  1. 01

    Material first

Both divisions start at the input: which mineral, which polymer, which pigment, and how it behaves in use.

  2. 02

    Controlled process

Specification before decoration. Thickness, particle size, consistency and finish are measured, not estimated.

  3. 03

    Built to be used

Products are designed for daily professional work, not for a photograph of it.
